Conference excursions
Visits to the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory and the Canister Laboratory including presentation of the Swedish and Finnish approach to geological disposal of nuclear waste. Visits to other Oskarshamn sites for demonstration of new energy technologies as SAFT, Oskarshamn Energy, District Heat Plant, and City Renewal Projects. Visit to the Simpevarp nuclear energy site, and to the future site for the experimental SMR plant SUNRISE
Oskarshamn has hosted three nuclear reactors, of which O3 has a capacity of 1450MW, for some time even the most powerful BWR of the world. Two other reactors are closed and are being dismantled.
Oskarshamn hosts the intermediate storage of spent nuclear fuel, the research facility for canister technology and the Äspö laboratory for studies of geological disposal of nuclear waste. OKG, the owner of the nuclear reactors also has a production site for hydrogen.
The population of Oskarshamn has consistently been largely positive towards nuclear power and radioactive waste management and disposal. The Swedish government recently approved that an encapsulation plant for spent nuclear fuel will be built in Oskarshamn. These canisters, once produced, will be sent for final disposal to the disposal site at Forsmark in Östhammar municipality. Construction is planned to start within a few years. Both these municipalities will also benefit from an added value agreement financed by the nuclear utilities.
